Confession: I avoided Lego’s for a long time. I had no idea where my kids would play with them or what I would do with all those tiny pieces. But the day came where Jase was introduced to some of his dad’s old Lego’s and everything changed. If you have been around here for any time, you already know that Jase is my wild child. He is my busy, energetic, doesn’t slow down for anything kid, but when he discovered Lego’s, everything changed. Not only was my house quiet, but Jase sat in one place for longer than five minutes. Lego’s were magic. There began the love of Lego’s in this family, therefore the need to come up with some sort of Lego storage and organization. I wanted a place that would offer the perfect solution for Lego storage, but also serve as play area for the kids.
Up until my Lego storage and play area came to life, we had a few tubs under Jase’s bed that moved its way around the house. This meant I was constantly finding Lego’s all over the house, stepping on them, or having to search the carpet after play time. Not only that, but Jase wanted a place to store all the creations he had put together and not have to tear them down. Under the bed just wasn’t working anymore.
So after pulling a few inspirational ideas together our Lego storage came to life. This Lego play area has offered a place where we can keep Lego’s organized and the kid’s can play! The only rule is that the Lego’s stay in this area. They don’t have to take things apart, they don’t have to clean up the table every night, they are free to leave whatever they were building set out. They think it’s a total win, when really it’s a win for me too!
Lego Storage + Organization
I used the IKEA Trofast storage system to pull this area together. The floor storage can hold six bins or three smaller bins and three larger ones. I opted for a few of the larger buckets so that I could store Duplo Legos for Jude as well. Jude loves being able to join in on the Lego fun. The storage unit also makes the perfect table for building!
I also have the wall unit to store specific sets of Lego’s. The buckets in the wall unit are much smaller than the floor unit, so they perfectly store sets. Jase has police sets, super hero sets, and a race car set right now. I used the buckets to store the sets together. He has four or five police sets, but I went ahead and stored all of those together. Elyse has one Shopkins set and I have hers stored in one of these smaller buckets as well.
Lego Play Area
We added a few stools for the kids to sit on while building and it’s literally one of their favorite spots in the playroom. I don’t blame them, I wish I had a pretty cool Lego area when I was a kid. I used one of Jase’s Lego Boxes to store all the instructions manuals so that he could refer back to them as well. He also uses the top shelf to store all his Lego creations that he wants to show off.
The lamp is a Happy Lamp, which is basically a lamp that puts of natural lighting. If you happen to be in an office that has no natural light, these things are amazing. We switched all of the light bulbs to daylight bulbs in my office since it is in the basement, so I was able to let the kids use this lamp for their area and it’s perfect. We keep a timer here for Jase’s after school routine to let him have a bit of responsibility in his “down time.” It has helped so much!
Lego Printables
Last but not least, the ADORABLE Lego printables were created by my sweet real life friend Brittany at Brittany Martin Designs. She is pretty much the guru of all designers. She makes party packs, printables, logos and branding, non-profit designs, and more. The possibilities are endless with Brittany. So if you are looking for anyone to help you with some graphic design needs, she is your gal! Be sure to check out her website and her shop for some of her designs! She is even offering these printables for my readers for free! You can grab your set here.
This Lego Play Area was so fun to put together and offers endless amounts of Lego Storage and Organization. I am so excited we took the plunge to put this area together. It has made keeping track of all those little pieces much easier. We are definitely a Lego family now and I wouldn’t change it!
