It almost feels foreign to come to this space and talk about baby things. Not that I don’t have babies, we all know I’ve been buried in diapers, wipes, spit-up, diaper cream, and everything in between for the last seven years of my life. These days, it’s mostly second nature and I don’t need to think twice when it comes to preparing for a baby…it just happens. Getting ready for a baby becomes something you can do in your sleep by the time you hit number four. Which in reality, that’s a good thing, because you don’t get much sleep with four kids. One thing you’ll have down as a seasoned parent is diaper changes. It’s no surprise that diaper changing becomes a consistent part of your daily routine as a parent. You’ll be changing a lot of diapers, so you want to be prepared with the diaper changing essentials.
Diaper Changing Station
Diaper changing stations aren’t a necessity. Some people find that an old dresser with a diaper changing pad or a basket full of diaper changing essentials work perfect. If you have multiple floors in your home, a basket of diaper changing essentials on each floor can work just as well. Whatever you find works best for you, just make sure you have a way to keep all diaper changing essentials together. You don’t want to find that you are missing something in the middle of a diaper change! Trust me, I’ve been there and it doesn’t end well. So set up a dresser in the nursery, a changing table in a common area, or have a basket with all the diaper changing essentials – or a combination of the three! You’ll be grateful to have everything you need for diaper changes ready to go.
Diaper Changing Essentials
As I said before, you don’t have to have an entire changing table set up. However, Evelynn and Elyse share a room, so we have a set up in our room to take care of all the diaper changing needs. We had this same set up in our room for Jude, and tweaked it just a little for Evelynn after learning what worked and didn’t work. I’m going to share with you everything that we keep at our diaper changing station, but if you choose a smaller set up you won’t need everything! So I’ll break it up into a “must have” list and a “nice to have” list.
Must Have
Diapers and Wipes. I think this one is pretty self explanatory, but I didn’t want to leave out the most important thing. Make sure the wipes you have are easy to open and resealable. I’ve gotten stuck with packages that don’t reseal and you don’t want all the wipes to dry out.
Diaper Cream. Unfortunately, diaper rashes happen. You never want to wait until it’s too late to buy diaper ointment. The faster you can attack a diaper rash, the better. So you want to be sure to have diaper cream on hand at all times so you can be proactive at the site of any diaper rash. Triple Paste Diaper Rash Cream is the premium to choice to help treat and prevent diaper rash. Recommended by pediatricians and tested by dermatologists, Triple Paste works quickly to provide all-in-one triple protection. Triple Paste works in preventing, treating, and soothing raw, irritated skin caused by diaper rash. Triple Paste is a thick soothing cream that works quickly and is free from unnecessary ingredients. Keep diaper ointment stocked at your diaper changing station at all times to treat diaper rash.
Change of clothes. When diaper explosions happen, and trust me they will, you don’t want to be caught without a change of clothes. I always keep an extra onesie and pants where I change diapers just in case a diaper leak happens.
Changing Mat or Changing Pad. This may not seem like a must have, and you may be tempted to just pass this one by, but let me tell you why you need a changing mat. The mess doesn’t always stay in the diaper. I cannot tell you how many times I have been peed on or pooped on while changing a diaper. Or I have laid the baby down to realize half way through changing them, that the diaper leaked at some point. It is MUCH easier to remove a cover on a changing pad, or wipe down a changing mat then it is to clean your carpet, couch, or anything else. So just trust me on this one and keep something nearby to change your baby’s diaper on.
Nice to Have
Now since our diaper changing station doubles as the care center for everything we need, we keep a few extra things on hand here too. I like to think of the diaper changing station as the catch all for baby needs. It gives a great place to store all the little accessories for baby in one place to help keep track of them. Sometimes there just doesn’t seem to be a better place to store any of these tiny items, so I like to think of this as a care station too! Here are the things you may find at ours:
Nose Cleaner
Baby Lotion
Nail Clippers
Diaper Pail Refills
Diaper Pail
Vaseline
Safety Q-Tips
Teething Oil
Baby Brush
Swaddles/Sleep Sacks
Pajama Sleepers
Even if you aren’t a very organized person, having all you need for diaper changes in a central area is something you won’t regret. Being caught in the middle of a diaper change with missing necessities is not fun. So make sure you’re stocked and ready to go, and don’t forget to grab some Triple Paste Diaper Cream so you are prepared for anything and everything!
