Summer is a season we look forward to every year. There is just something about school being out, the pools being open, and the extra hours of daylight to soak it all in. While I’m not a huge fan of the Midwest humidity, I can’t let a summer go by without getting outside making lasting memories with my family. The memories and traditions are worth all those sweaty moments. Summer is going to look a lot different for many of us this year, but it doesn’t mean we can’t make the most of it. There are plenty of ways to make memories right in your own back yard! While you’re busy making lasting memories with your kids this summer, you want to make sure that safety is a top priority. It’s important that we all take time to go over summer safety tips with our families before summer begins.
Summer Safety Tips
It’s easy to get caught up in all the fun and busy days that come along with summer. Before you know it, an entire day has passed by and you’re exhausted! You can barely remember how your day started and you’re ready to fall into bed. That’s the beauty of summer. Everyone goes to bed easy because the days are full of so much fun! In the midst of all the fun we can forget some really important safety measures.
Summer time brings with it things you might not pay much attention to on a daily basis, but are now more important than ever. Taking the time to talk through these important summer safety tips with your family and setting yourself up for success is important. Before you jump full on into summer, check out these summer safety tips with your family.
Hydrate! Hydrate! Hydrate!
Staying hydrated during the heat of the summer is one of the most important things to do. The more time you spend in the sun, the more that your body is exhausted. Drinking the proper amount of water is needed to keep your body regulated so that it can do what it needs to. Make staying hydrated easy by having water bottles on hand for everyone in the family. Fill them up at the start of the day, and make it a game to finish a certain number of bottles a day. Keep the bottles with you wherever you go to encourage water drinking throughout the day.
You can also think of other creative and fun ways to stay hydrated! Summer fruit, especially watermelon, is packed full of water to help keep your body hydrated. Popsicles are always fun too, especially for kids! If you need even more creativity, you can find flavors for your water or use fruit to naturally infuse the water for a little taste!
Use Proper Sunscreen.
Sunscreen is important in protecting your skin against harmful UV rays. Sunscreen helps to block those rays, greatly reducing your chances of getting sunburn. Even on cloudy days, the sun’s rays can pass through clouds making it still possible to get a sunburn. So when you’re tempted to skip the sunscreen, remember that even on cloudy days it’s important. Road Safety.
Road safety is very important to go over with your family more than once. When you are focused on playing, it’s easy to forget the dangers of running into the street without looking. Whether you are chasing a ball or riding a bike or trying to catch a frisbee, taking a moment to stop and look both ways before going into the street is important. If your neighborhood has sidewalks, encourage your kids to use the sidewalks. If your neighborhood doesn’t, try to find calm streets for bike riding or use children at play signs to alert drivers of your kids playing nearby. Whatever you do, practice road safety with your kids.
Water Safety.
Water safety is a big deal, especially when it comes to summer time. Many families spend a lot of time in water, whether it’s a backyard pool or a community pool, water safety is very important. Teach your children not to go near water or enter water without an adult present. When your children are playing in the pool, make sure an adult is present at all times keeping a close eye. Remember, drowning doesn’t look like it does on TV, it’s often silent and missed. If you can invest in survival swim lessons (look for a post on this soon!), do it before summer begins!
Stay Cool.
Summer temperatures can get high very quickly. When spending time outside, wear lighter weight clothing. Lighter colors and breathable fabrics can help keep your body cool in the sun. Look for shaded areas to rest when you need to cool down. Remember that between the hours of 10Am and 2PM the UV rays are at it’s strongest and the temperatures are at their highest. If possible, avoid spending long amounts of time outside at this time.
Taking the time to go over these summer safety tips with your family can ensure that you have an awesome summer! How does your family practice summer safety?
